This float features extensive use of vermilion lacquer and is richly decorated with intricate carvings.

The overall theme is the legend of the carp ascending the waterfall (Tōryūmon). On the first level, carvings on the four pillars depict carp climbing a waterfall, symbolizing perseverance and success.

Great Temple Bell

This bell bears an inscription in gold leaf reading “Haguro Daigongen.” It is regarded as a symbolic representation of Haguro Shrine. The sound of a temple bell is traditionally believed to dispel worldly desires, and the term bon (Brahma) signifies sacredness and purity in ancient India.

According to local tradition, the Yamamoto family—metal casters living in Nagai-machi—once prospered after being granted a workshop by the Murakami domain. During their family festival, they are said to have placed a bell on a cart and pulled it in procession. However, following the decline of their patron, their craft also diminished, and the use of the bell in festivals came to an end.

It is believed that the Yamamoto family was the first to place a bell on a festival cart, and that this bell was later adopted as the mounted feature of Kamimachi’s shagiri float. A reference in the diary of Matsudaira Naonori to the “Kamimachi bell procession” may refer to this very bell, which was once a ritual object of the Yamamoto family.

The main crest features the characters “Miyako-jō” (都上). Kamimachi is located next to Komachi and has long been a lively, bustling area.

The base pattern consists of vertical stripes with horizontal lines, while the hem pattern features an arabesque-style design.

The happi coats of Kamimachi were originally in dark colors such as navy and black, similar to other districts, but were changed to orange in the 1970s.
