庄内町の屋台

にわか屋台であったが、平成11年にしゃぎり屋台を新造したのち、毎年手が加えられ、彫り物が取り付けられ、17年かけて計画的に完成させるという手法を用いた。
一層囃子台の擬宝珠柱は丸直立、正面階は三段、登り高欄をつける。架木は丸、平桁は角とする。前庇は朱漆塗りの地に金箔押しの流水の蕪を置き、左右と後腰屋根を回す。
二層飾り台の擬宝珠は海老曲りとしている。高欄には平桁を付けず、架木のみとしている。
見送りは涛に兎、陰陽の月とする。
日覆いは切妻とし、破風は中央に金の鯱(しゃち)をつけ、波をあしらう。鯱は空想上の魚で、火伏の意味を持つことから、建物の屋根などによく飾られる。

Originally a niwaka-yatai (a simplified festival float), this float was newly constructed as a shagiri-yatai (festival music float) in 1999 (Heisei 11). Thereafter, it was gradually refined each year, with carvings and decorative elements added over time, following a planned process that took 17 years to complete.

On the first level, the giboshi finials are supported by straight round pillars. The front staircase has three steps and is fitted with railings. The crossbeams are round, while the main beams are square. The front canopy is finished in vermilion lacquer and adorned with gold-leaf motifs of flowing water and turnips, extending around both sides and the rear roof.

On the second level, the decorative stage features curved corner pillars in a distinctive shrimp-like form. The railings are constructed without main beams, using only crossbeams.

The rear display (miokuri) depicts waves and a rabbit, along with the yin and yang moon.

The roof covering is gabled, with a golden shachihoko (mythical fish) placed at the center of the bargeboard, accompanied by wave motifs. The shachihoko, a legendary creature believed to protect against fire, is commonly used as a decorative element on rooftops.

庄内町の乗せ物

「瓢鮎(ひょうねん)」
禅の公案、瓢鮎図を具現化したもの。
室町時代の足利将軍義持は禅僧を集めて「糸で繋いだ矢で鳥を射るにはどうすればよいか、口の小さい瓢箪で鮎(なまず)を捕らえるにはいかにすればよいか」という公案を問うたところ、集まった禅僧はそれぞれ違った解答をしたという。「百尺の竿頭の上から一歩前に前進したならば死ぬか生きるか、答えよ」と問うたものと同じで常識では計り知れない問である。
「不可能に可能を探る」、前向きで何事にも屈しない精神を表す。
 瓢箪は水を入れる容器であるが、水霊の籠る呪具でもある。瓢箪を庄内町のシンボルとするのは、防火の願いを込めたものである。
 また、鯰は地震を起こすとされていた。鯰を瓢箪で鎮めることで地震の起きない世に期待を込めている。

Hyōnen (Gourd and Catfish)

This motif represents the Zen koan known as the “Hyōnen-zu” (Gourd and Catfish), an expression of an impossible challenge.

During the Muromachi period, Ashikaga Yoshimochi, a shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate, gathered Zen monks and posed a question: “How can one shoot a bird with an arrow tied to a string? How can one catch a catfish with a small-mouthed gourd?” Each monk offered a different answer. Like the well-known Zen question, “If you step forward from the top of a hundred-foot pole, will you live or die?”, these are problems that cannot be resolved through ordinary logic.

The motif symbolizes the spirit of seeking possibility within the impossible—a forward-looking mindset that refuses to yield in the face of difficulty.

The gourd, while a vessel for holding water, has also been regarded as a sacred object believed to contain the spirit of water. In Shōnai-machi, the gourd is used as a symbol expressing a wish for protection from fire.

The catfish, on the other hand, was traditionally believed to cause earthquakes. By depicting the catfish subdued within a gourd, the design conveys a hope for a world free from earthquakes.

庄内町の法被

大紋は「庄」で、町名に由来する。地模様は乗せ物である瓢鮎図にちなんで瓢箪の図柄と水の文字(篆書体のさんずい)を意匠化したものといわれる。裾柄は山道となっている。

The main crest features the character “Shō” (庄), derived from the name of the district.

The base pattern is said to be inspired by the float’s mounted motif, the “Hyōnen-zu” (gourd and catfish), incorporating stylized designs of gourds along with the water radical (the “three-dot water” in seal script form).

The hem pattern is based on a mountain path motif.
